Coronavirus Update February 08, 2020
By Dr. Erik Fleischman –
Here’s an update on the development of new (and old) treatments for 2019 nCoV – Coronavirus:
“China has announced it will immediately commence clinical trials on an experimental drug, remdesivir, in hopes of finding an effective treatment for the novel coronavirus. The news comes just 3 days after a paper was published in the New England Journal of Medicine claiming that remdesivir, which is not yet approved by drug regulators in any country, may have helped alleviate the symptoms of a 35 year old male novel coronavirus patient in Washington state.
Remdesivir clinical trials will have a scale of approximately 500 mild and 500 severe cases; it is said to be considered a double-blind randomized clinical trial with half of the patients are using placebo. A cocktail of antiviral drugs appeared effective in treating a seriously ill patient infected with the coronavirus that’s spreading around the world, a Thai health official has said.
The HIV medicines lopinavir and ritonavir (sold as Kaletra) were used on 3 patients along with the anti-flu medication oseltamivir. Kaletra is already being studied in a randomized, controlled trial — the gold standard for testing new medical products — in coronavirus patients in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak began.”
