Here’s an update on the development of new (and old) treatments for 2019 nCoV – Coronavirus:

“China has announced it will immediately commence clinical trials on an experimental drug, remdesivir, in hopes of finding an effective treatment for the novel coronavirus. The news comes just 3 days after a paper was published in the New England Journal of Medicine claiming that remdesivir, which is not yet approved by drug regulators in any country, may have helped alleviate the symptoms of a 35 year old male novel coronavirus patient in Washington state. Remdesivir clinical trials will have a scale of approximately 500 mild and 500 severe cases; it is said to be considered a double-blind randomized clinical trial with half of the patients are using placebo. A cocktail of antiviral drugs appeared effective in treating a seriously ill patient infected with the coronavirus that’s spreading around the world, a Thai health official has said. The HIV medicines lopinavir and ritonavir (sold as Kaletra) were used on 3 patients along with the anti-flu medication oseltamivir. Kaletra is already being studied in a randomized, controlled trial — the gold standard for testing new medical products — in coronavirus patients in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak began.”

Coronavirus PSA #5

Time for another reality check on 2019 nCoV. Current facts as of February 10.

The mortality or death rate of 2019 nCoV is 2.2%.

To put this in perspective of recent viral epidemics:

  • SARS (2003) death rate 10%
  • MERS (2012) death rate 34%
  • Ebola (2014) death rate 44%
Criteria for a Suspected Case:

  • SEVERE lower respiratory illness (lungs involved – usually both lungs) with no clear cause and
  • History of travel to China within 14 days or
  • Contact with a confirmed or probable case of 2019 nCoV
There have only been 2 deaths outside of China. They were in Hong Kong and Philippines.

Follow the rules: wash your hands! Stop touching public surfaces! Don’t touch your face! Boost your immune system (vitamins and good sleep)!

5 Tips for People on the Front Lines of Customer Service COVID-19

Each of these topics is not only important to fight COVID-19, but will also bring tremendous health benefits after we are finally clear of the epidemic. Strong immune system maintenance is the best defense you have.

If you aren’t getting 7 hours of sleep a night (or a day, if you are a night-shift worker) you are likely having more than drooping eyes at work. Less than 7 hours of sleep causes suppression of the immune system and increased chances of Depression, Diabetes, Obesity, High Blood Pressure and even Cancer. Sleeping pills are not the answer either. Chronic use of prescription sleeping pills have their own problems such as loss of cognitive function, lowering sex hormones and hangover. I recommend using Melatonin 1-3 mg (Melatonin production drops 1% per year in your body after age 40) or L-Tryptophan or Ashwaganda or Valerian Root. These will give you 7-8 hours of good sleep while supporting your immune and brain function.

Vitamin C
The debate for scientific proof that Vitamin C is good for your immune system has gone on for over 60 years, yet it continues to be used worldwide to treat and prevent bacterial and viral infections. Scientific studies show that infections deplete your Vitamin C levels in the body very quickly, so as a treatment it seems essential. I have recommended and used oral Vitamin C daily as a preventative with 1000-3000 mg per day. I have had amazing success for over 10 years with high dose Intravenous Vitamin C when treating patients with severe viruses and infections such as HIV/AIDS, H1N1, H5N1, Dengue Fever and Malaria. This treatment is now being used in several countries to treat COVID-19. It makes good biological sense as a preventative.

Vitamin D3
“Vitamin” D3 is actually mislabeled. It is really a hormone and has great responsibility in many critical functions of the body.

  • Immune Function: Vitamin D improves the effect of immune T-cells, the cells responsible for clearing ALL viruses from the body and killing them before they become an infection
  • Anti-Depression: Low Vitamin D levels have been implicated as a major contributor to Clinical Depression
  • Hormone Function and Sex Drive: Men and women with low Vitamin D levels do not produce optimal levels of sex hormones (Testosterone, Estrogen and Progesterone) and Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in Early Menopause in women and Erectile Dysfunction in men
  • Heart, Bone and Muscle development and more

The only foods that provide it are fatty fish (not overcooked!) People with dark skin and those who don’t like the sun are especially prone. You can only increase your vitamin D by being in the morning sunlight with a lot of exposed skin. Forty Percent of my tested patients have a Vitamin D deficiency.

Hand Sanitizer
Use it. Liberally! But use it correctly. Alcohol kills viruses and bacteria by evaporation, so do not rub off the sanitizer quickly after applying it. Let it evaporate naturally. It works by literally sucking out the water molecules in the germs. Equally as important is the physical rubbing process to sterilize hands or surfaces. Soap and water also work very effectively. At Bangkok Anti-Aging Center, I have the cleaning staff cleansing surfaces every hour. We have also created a culture of “search and clean” where ALL OUR STAFF note the areas of higher volume of people and direct the cleaning efforts where needed. If you see something, say something!

We all love it. It does not love us back.

Viruses survive on – you guessed it – sugar. It is no surprise that people with Diabetes are one of the worst victims of COVID-19 and the ones most often requiring hospitalization and ventilator use. The same goes with obese people for the same reason. The immune system in Diabetics and obese people is poorly prepared to fight the rapid growth of virus when it can grow and replicate so rapidly. My recommendation (especially for those who refuse to give up sugar and carbohydrates) is to do Intermittent Fasting for at least 4 of 7 days a week. After your last meal of the day, don’t eat again until 16 hours later. Only eat for 8 hours out of the day. For the other hours, you can drink coffee and tea (no sugar added) and water with lemon. It is easier than it sounds and the healthiest diet I know.

COVID-19 and Our Children

Most of the focus so far about COVID-19 infections has been on our older population (of which I am officially one by age!). But, let’s talk about the other precious beings in our homes: the kids.

Anyone who is helping with homeschooling now has gotten to know their children far better than they did two to three weeks ago. We live for them, we focus on them, we would take a bullet for them. But, what can we do to keep them safe and sane?

Here are some facts about COVID-19 and children:
  • A study done in Wuhan of 171 infected children show that 35% of them had laboratory confirmation, while 64% were diagnosed only by suspicion and their symptoms. 25% of these children had no symptoms.
  • Older children seemed to recover faster and have less severe infections than younger children. Why is this? It is not yet fully known but, likely due to a different immune process or the fact that older children can produce antibodies more quickly and in more volume. Remember, it’s these antibodies that not only protect you from getting the disease again but, also make the disease go away more quickly.
  • Children, while still getting the classic symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath, also seem to have more upper respiratory symptoms such as sinusitis and runny noses. This can possibly increase their ability to spread the virus as there will be more droplets in secretions.
  • As with adults, the secret to preventing infection or getting the mildest infection possible is a strong immune system. For children to have this, they need to be eating a balanced diet with lots of protein. Limit the sugar. Viruses, bacteria and fungus all grow on sugar. If they don’t have sugar they will not flourish. Give your children Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Minerals. Make sure they are getting some safe sunshine and exercise to keep their circulation good and their brains clear.
We are all in new territory with this virus. Our children may not grasp the severity of this epidemic and that is probably okay for now. In the next post, let’s talk about how to explain this epidemic to children and how to help them cope.

How they beat COVID-19 in warmer countries

We know by now that the spread and severity and death from COVID-19 is far less in countries that are warm and closer to the equator. But I think perhaps this has a number of factors that contribute to the difference.

🔥Heat Shock Proteins🔥

I’ve posted before about Heat Shock Proteins and they place in Anti-Aging and Regenerative medicine. They stimulate faster cell repair, lower blood pressure, lower stress hormones and help us lose weight and probably help to find and kill Cancer cells more quickly. Here is what they can do for you:

  • Protection from heart disease
  • Rebuild muscle faster
  • Potential protection against Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Improve cell regeneration

They also have a profound function with our immune systems which are especially important in the control or Viral infections.

Viruses enter our bodies all the time. If you think about it long enough it can make you crazy! Each and every day, even if you just stay home, you are being exposed to hundreds of viruses that your immune system is finding and neutralizing before it can enter your organ cells and create havoc and inflammation.

It is your internal immune system ANTIBODY RESPONSE that seeks and destroys these foreign invaders- both before they can replicate and grow in your body and then after they have already caused an infection. This sophisticated system of recognition involved the discovery of foreign invaders by their ANTIGEN response. These are the individual proteins on a bacteria or virus or other pathogen that get recognized by your circulating immune cells. Those immune cells then immediately send out antibodies and other cells to kill the offending foreigner. Simple, elegant, ingenious and the reason most of us live entirely healthy lives even in areas of tremendous amounts of viruses, bacteria and parasites. To simplify the process, the body teaches itself very quickly to recognize an invasion and stop it before it ever breaches the wall (the cells in your organs- such as the lungs in COVID-19 infection).

Heat Shock Proteins can activate your lymph nodes to produce a faster, more effective immune response.

Here’s where Heat Shock Proteins may play a key role. These tiny particles, that are created during exposure to extreme temperature, actually increase the ability of faster and more efficient recognition of the foreign invader. You could theorize that those living in hotter countries have a more efficient immune system recognition system against viruses like COVID-19. This would mean that we have less total infections, less symptomatic infections, potentially more recoverable infections and, ultimately, less deaths from COVID-19.

When I add up all the other factors that we know (and remember this science is less than a year old) we see the same factors of age, pre-existing disease and obesity from country to country. It seems to me that heat is playing an important factor and I recommend that my patients exploit this advantage to stay healthy and prevent getting infected by COVID-19.

So the big question is what can people do to produce these protective proteins without boiling themselves!?

Here is what I do personally and recommend for my patients and family:

  1. Intense exercise builds Heat Shock Proteins. Leave the air conditioning off! Heat the body
  2. Fasting creates Heat Shock Proteins. Intermittent fasting (eating only 8 hours out of the day- stopping eating after dinner until 16 hours later for your first meal) has tremendous health benefits besides this.
  3. Use a Steam Room or Sauna if you have one available. Even 10-15 minutes a day creates Heat Shock Proteins, lowers cardiac risk, lowers blood pressure and lowers stress proteins.
  4. Warm steam to your airways is a good way to cleanse them and perhaps creates a local effect of Heat Shock Proteins. I do deep breathing in the Sauna to help sterilize my airways of the sinuses and lungs.

So stay warm, stay hungry, stay healthy, stay away from sugar, stay asleep and hopefully this will help you stay away from a COVDI-19 infection.
